Description:

FERDINAND CATLOS PRESENTATION ALBUM
(1895 - 1972) Czech Minister of Defense during World War II. The Slovak Republic, being bound to Germany by military treaty, sent troops to the Eastern Front under Catlos' tenure. He silently allowed underground groups to work toward a break with Germany, but once Germany commenced an occupation of Slovakia, Catlos evidently lost his nerve and urged citizens to accept the occupation. Fine leatherbound photo album, 19pp, 13 1/2" x 10" overall, presented to Gen. Franz Barckhausen, head of the German military mission to Slovakia. The first page bears a dedication, with the following page bearing a 5" x 7" b/w signed photo of Catlos in uniform, hand-decorated with the Slovakian coat of arms. The following pages, also hand-decorated, bear photos showing Catlos and Barckhausen and their respective staffs, Slovakian collaborators, President Jozef Tiso speaking and reviewing troops on parade, Germans undertaking public works, etc. The hand-tooled cover bears brass rivets and ornaments (one missing), otherwise fine condition. Tiso would be hanged for treason in 1947, Catlos would spend three years in jail at war's end, and Barckhausen was transferred to a desk job in France, where we believe he surrendered.
