Description:

Interesting set of four carved chair legs and two back posts, each approx. 16 ¾" x 2 ¾", all in the form of the "fasces", the bundled rod symbol of Fascist Italy, with the two back posts also bearing the axe blades that complete the symbol. Each piece is numbered on the verso in pencil, while one leg bears a brass plaque reading: "Mussolini Italy Anzio/Netuno [sic] 1944". The reverse of this leg also bears the black ink inscription: "Remove from personal chair of Benito [Mussolini] at his office in NETUNO [sic] (just close to Anzio) approx. 2 weeks after capture of Anzio. Removed by Joseph W. Bradhard, Jr." Although Mussolini never had an official headquarters in Nettuno, he did sign the Treaty of Nettuno with Yugoslavia at the Forte Sangallo on July 20, 1925. This treaty allowed Italians to freely settle on Yugoslavia's Dalmatian coast. It is likely that these relics were taken from the Forte Sangallo, and possible that the chair that they were removed from was used by Mussolini during the signing of this treaty. The relics show small dings overall, with one back post showing a 2" chip, else very good.
