Description:

Small files of documents and photographs pertaining to the on-site F.B.I. investigation of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in December, 1963. Included is: file copy of a Dec. 19, 1963 letter from Director J. EDGAR HOOVER to Special Agent Gordon Shanklin commending him and his fellow agents who "contributed in such a splendid fashion to the investigation of the assassination of the President". Also present is a printed document, 6pp. 4to., [Dallas, December, 1963], listing the names of 43 FBI Special Agents attached to the investigation, then two lists each containing names of those agents, one list being "44 SQUAD" with two shifts, the second being "89 SQUAD", also in two shifts. Eight other men are listed as "SECURITY SQUAD" and several dozen women are attached to the squads as stenographers, typists, clerks, etc. There is a membership card for a lounge at the Adolphus Hotel, Dallas, where the agents were quartered, issued to S/A Harold R. Dobson, as well as the envelope which held the printed list. Finally, there are seven 5" x 3" original photographs. One image shows the New Orleans mug shots taken of Lee Harvey Oswald on Aug. 9, 1963 with his name and eight aliases penned on the verso, apparently in Dobson's hand. The balance of the photos, date-stamped "NOV 1963" show the interior of the storeroom at the Texas School Book Depository, views from the shooter's window, and an image of a man with a camera taking pictures. In all probability, that man is Dobson. Finally, there is a highly-detailed photograph of Oswald's scoped Carcano M38 rifle, the best such image we've seen, 9 1/4" x 2 1/2", staples at the edges to a larger sheet.
