Description:

"EVERY DAMN ONE OF THE IRISH...ARE BLACK SECESSIONISTS"
A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Thomas Landers, Co. D, 16th Mass. Vols., Camp Hamilton, Va., Sept. 10, 1861. In part: "…we left North Cambridge and went to Fall River and took the steam boat to New York…then we left for Fortress Monroe…where we are stopping now…it is hotter than hell in Virginia. You ought to see all the nice houses and farms that are laying waisted here. I have been in the house that old president Tyler used to live in. It aint more than ten rods from where we are. You…ought to see this fort…it would puzzle the devil to get into it…there is…any quantity of man of war vessels out side of it. We can see the rebels from the fort. They are so near…they come…over to the fort in a steam boat with a flag of truce, but they won't let them come very near now…every damn one of the Irish around this part of the world are black secessionists and they think it is very strange that the Irish in the north should come out here to fight against the south. You had ought to see the Catholic Cathedrals and churches in Baltimore. They are the greatest buildings that I ever saw…direct to myself, Co. D, 16 Reg. M. V. M…". Unsigned. Also included is a 3pp. 8vo., Fort Barnard, [Washington, D. C.], Feb. 6, 1863 written by Landers concerning not hearing from a comrade after the battle of Second Bull Run. Very good.
