Description:

EVA BRAUN SEWING BOX
EVA BRAUN (1912 - 1945) German mistress and later wife of Nazi fuhrer Adolf Hitler, she later committed suicide with him in the basement of the Chancellery. A large tramp art sewing box undoubtedly gifted to Braun, 12.5 x 9 x 7 in. overall, with completely hand-carved decoration on every side. The hinged lid bears a pin cushion at center surrounded by the numbers '1 9 4 3', the year this piece was given to Braun, with her initials 'E B' below. The front of the box has large letters reading (in English): 'SEWING KIT'. There is also a pull-out drawer for supplies at bottom, and a large padded cushion on the underside of the top lid into which additional pins and needles could be placed. The letters and numbers were clearly attached to the box many years ago, and the carving of the box was done especially to accommodate them. Within the box was found a Braun calling card bearing the address of her parents, probably placed by them within this gift. This box may have been given to Braun by the craftsman, or more likely was commissioned by one of her friends as a whimsical souvenir. Some small bits of trim has broken of and been lost over the years, otherwise generally very good. Braun's mother had worked as a seamstress prior to her marriage and no doubt shared her talents with her daughter.
