Description:

An incredibly rare early SA relic, an embroidered presentation flag dedicated to Standartenfuhrer Franz Panzer, an officer from S.A. group Niederrhein, Sturm 1, Reserve Standarte 16, stationed in Cologne. The cotton flag, 58 x 41.5 in., is constructed of a one-piece black swastika stitched to a white disc, which in turn is stitched onto a red field. A sewn-on black square appears towards the upper-left corner, which bears the identification number '1/R16' embroidered in white and black thread. Along the bottom edge appears the embroidered dedication in red thread: 'Reserve Sturm 1. 16. Stbf. Keulen 1931...Stf. Panzer 1931-34'. The edges have been reinforced with additional sewn-on strips of red cotton. The hoist end bears six cotton loops, four of which contain chromed metal hoops for hanging. One cotton loop at the top corner is absent, and yellow, black, and gilded threads have been stitched there instead. Two of the cotton loops at the bottom corner appear to be missing metal hoops, as well. The flag is slightly soiled at spots, with some very slight holes and very small tears at bottom edge. Still in very good condition, and much better condition than is typically seen. Sold with additional research of Panzer, including his particulars and some further information about his later military career, including his rise to Obersturmbannfuhrer by 1937.
