Description:

ELLSWORTH'S ZOUAVES FLAG RELIC
A great relic of the regimental flag of the 11th New York "Fire Zouaves", founded by "martyr" Col. E. Elmer Ellsworth. The flag section measures 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" with a 1 3/4" strip at one end, laid down on an old paper mount. It is accompanied by an early (museum?) tag reading in a period hand: "Piece of the flag of Elsworths [sic] Regt". The tag is attached to a period engraving, and it and the relic are housed in a period frame. Very good. The 11th New York was recruited and organized in New York City was mustered in at Washington on May 7, 1861. It was composed of members of the New York Fired Dept. The Zouaves got their first taste of battle on July 21, 1861 when they encountered into Jeb Stuart's Virginia cavalry on the fields of Bull Run. An important relic!
