Description:

(ELIZABETH I) FRANCIS WALSINGHAM
(1532 - 1590) Principal secretary to Elizabeth I of England from 1573 to 1590, popularly remembered as the Queen's 'spymaster'. His intelligence gathering techniques allowed him to penetrate the heart of Spanish military preparations against England, thwarted numerous plots against Elizabeth and secured the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots. Rare A.L.S. 1p. legal folio, [London], Apr. 22[?], 1577 accomplished in his hurried version of the "secretary hand" and hence nearly illegible to us, but it appears to concern the deposit of £5000. As Walsingham was the Queen's spymaster, this piece is most certainly worthy of further study. Moderate soiling and folds, marginal wear with some losses filled in with period paper, else very good condition.
