ELI WHITNEY
(1765 - 1825) American inventor whose invention for removing seeds from cotton, the cotton gin, revolutionized the trade and led to an enormous increase in cotton production. Whitney later became an arms manufacturer and pioneered the use of interchangeable parts. Rare A.L.S. 1p. 4to., New Haven, Oct. 21, 1801 [?], to Tobias & Adam in New Canaan, in part: "...Your favor of the 19th inst with 36 Bars [?] of Iron by Obediah Brown I have this morning rec'd. I have paid Mr. Brown for the transportation...this letter shall vouch for you that the Iron left with you by Thos Robbins on the 18th day of Dec 1800 and has been delivered to me...". Moderate staining, one hole repaired with archival tape, overall very good condition, and bearing a fine, bold signature. EBAY 1500
