Description:

EDWARD SHIPPEN
(1728 - 1806) Chief Justice of Pennsylvania and a moderate Loyalist, he was father-in-law of Benedict Arnold. Manuscript D.S. 1p. folio parchment, Philadelphia, Apr. 15, 1794, an indenture concerning the sale of a parcel of land called "Pikeland" by a British citizen, attested by Shippen at bottom. Also signed by BENJAMIN CHEW and BENJAMIN CHEW, JR." as representatives of the seller, beside their wax seals at bottom. Wrinkled, with a stain affecting an area of text near center, yet overall still quite good. Benjamin Chew (1722 – 1810) was a lawyer, politician and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Province of Pennsylvania. Early in the American Revolution, both sides claimed his allegiance, since he had a visible position in the colony. Chew himself was apparently undecided about the correct course to take. In August 1777 he was arrested along with Governor John Penn, and taken to Union, New Jersey. He was released at Union after giving his parole that he would not try to leave the area. On May 15, 1778 the Continental Congress passed a resolution that released him from that parole, and he returned to his home.
