Description:

E. REMINGTON & SONS 1871 RIDER MAGAZINE DERRINGER
Rare Remington six-shot Rider magazine derringer, 2 1/2" barrel, 5 3/4" overall, chambered for a specially designed extra-short .30 caliber rimfire cartridge. Six rounds were loaded into the tube beneath the barrel, and the weapon was then cocked by means of a unique double hammer. The smaller rear hammer cocks the gun, while the larger hammer operates a lever which raises the round at the rear of the tube into the chamber. The forward hammer is then returned to its original position, lowering the lever and allowing the weapon to be fired. This example feature blonde horn grips, and bears no engraving, save for the inscription at the top of the barrel: "E. Remington & Sons, Ilion N.Y., Rider''s Pat. Aug. 15th 1871". The weapon appears to have originally been blued, although much of this finish is worn away, especially at the barrel. The spring-loaded cap at the opening of the magazine is missing, else very good.
