E. HOWARD HUNT
(1918 – 2007) American intelligence officer in the CIA. Along with G. Gordon Liddy, Frank Sturgis, and others, Hunt was one of the Nixon administration 'plumbers', a team of operatives charged with identifying government sources of national security information 'leaks' to outside parties. Hunt and Liddy plotted the Watergate burglaries and other clandestine operations for the Nixon administration. Very early T.L.S. 'Howard Hunt' on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., Alexandria, Jan. 10, 1950 to de facto Ambassador to Austria John G. Erhardt mentioning that he receives letters too infrequently from a mutual State Department friend '...to permit me to remain fully apprised of the situation in Austria...' and thanks Erhardt and his wife for making his stay in Vienna pleasant. Paper clip stain at top, else fine. In 1949, Hunt joined the CIA's Office of Policy Coordination (OPC) and assigned as a covert action officer specializing in political action and influence in what later came to be called the CIA's Special Activities Division. Hunt became the OPC Station Chief in Mexico City in 1950, and recruited William F. Buckley Jr.. He also helped lay the framework for Operation PBFortune, the successful covert operation to overthrow Jacobo Árbenz, the democratically elected president of Guatemala.
