Description:

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. Good content T.L.S. "D. E." on his gold "D.D.E." letterhead, 1p. 4to., Gettysburg, Oct. 19, 1966, to his friend, Sigurd Larmon, President of the Young and Rubicam advertising agency. Eisenhower sends a list of the major accomplishments during his two-terms as president (included) which also criticizes "columnists and partisans" who rely on "catchy phrases" which "made easy the way of the exhibitionist", aided by "new economists and members of the personality cult". Ike's letter itself reads, in part: "...The list attached herewith is by no means complete. A few days ago when asked for a list of accomplishments...I dashed these off from the top of my head along with a few comments...". Paperclip stain at top, else fine. In 1966, Johnson's Democrats lost forty-seven seats to the Republican Party in the House, and three seats in the Senate. Despite their losses, the Democrats retained control of both chambers of Congress.
