Description:

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. Fine content T.L.S. as President, 1p. 4to., Washington, May 31, 1960, on White House letterhead to his friend Robert Gros, Vice President of Pacific Gas and Electric. He writes about the disastrous Cold War summit meeting in Paris, in part: "...I am again indebted to you -- grateful to you for taking the trouble to write me regarding my Report to the Nation last week and gratified beyond measure by the generosity of your praise of my effort during the amazing period I spent in Paris. I know that in your appearances before groups throughout the West, you will be, as always, an effective voice on the side of calmness and reason...". On May 15-19, 1960, two weeks after the Gary Powers U-2 spy incident, Eisenhower and Khrushchev met in Paris to discuss improved relations. Ike refused to apologize and Khrushchev stormed out of the meeting - no treaty was signed. Robert Gros was San Francisco's official city escort when Khrushchev visited in 1959. He knew and interviewed eleven U.S. Presidents, as well as Chiang Kai Shek, Indira Gandhi, Charles Lindbergh, Gertrude Stein and numerous other notables of the time. Eisenhower also personally commended Gros in 1956 for his services to NATO. Light offsetting, glue stains to verso but no showthrough, very good.
