DOROTHY CANFIELD FISHER
(1879 – 1958) American educational reformer, social activist, and best-selling American author in the early 20th century. She strongly supported women's rights, racial equality, and lifelong education. Lot of two T.L.S.s, each 1p. 4to., Arlingon, Vt., 1943 to an American soldier and his father on teaching literature. In part: '...Teachers of English literature...have my warmest sympathy, and rather anxious sympathy, too, for I see them so often overwhelmed by the difficulties of battling against the whole background of their students' lives, as well as the natural ignorance of youth...' She refers to the soldier's thesis on Mark Twain and music: '...Mark Twain did teach himself to appreciate good music after he had grown up...' In the second letter, Fisher returns the thesis to the soldier's father, calling it a "scholarly and penetrating study' on 'our greatest American humorist. Two pieces.
