Description:

Great grouping of seven items once belonging to Gertrude E. Lawrence, an American 'yeomanette' during and after World War I. The lot includes a great content letter written by a potential love interest, 4pp. 8vo., notably reading: 'Only fourteen hours ago you went away to war and left the men folks behind...it was great to see you, undisturbed and queenlike...Keep a brave front and reassure your mother. I know you are plucky. You can bring those teeth and lips together with fine determination, and I know you are going to do it...I miss you dreadfully...but I would be ashamed to moan when you are doing the brave and the unselfish...' Sold with two portraits of Lawrence in uniform; a letter forwarding her pay from an accounting officer on New York Navy Yard letterhead, dated June 6, 1919, addressing her as 'Yeoman (F) 1st Class', and sold with transmittal envelope; a pass for liberty issued to a U.S. Soldier within the 104th Aero Squadron, signed by Lawrence at bottom as '1st. Lieutenant' and the squadron's adjutant; an advertisement pass for a dance by 'Enlisted Navy Girls'; and a YMCA postcard addressed to Lawrence by an unknown person. Very good.
