Description:

Fine desk presentation piece, approx. 9" x 5 ½" x 6 ½", in the form of the Lion of St. Mark, a winged lion with its paw resting on an open Bible, in brass on a green marble base. The Lion of St. Mark was adopted as the unit insignia of the U.S. Army's 332nd Infantry Regiment, and the base is fitted with a brass presentation plaque to that unit's commander during World War I: "To Colonel William G. Everson from the Officers and Men of the U.S. Army 332nd Infantry Regiment, Italy, 11 Nov. 1918". The presentation shows a fine patina to the brass elements, else very good. The 332nd was deployed to Italy in July of 1918 and was tasked with building Italian morale while deceiving opposing Austrian forces into thinking that a large American force was available to shore up Italian forces. To this end, the regiment conducted a series of marches from the city of Treviso, with each battalion equipped with different uniforms and insignia, each departing by a different route. At the war's end, the regiment captured several Austrian positions along the Tagliamento River, and was tasked with peacekeeping duties along the Dalmatian coast following the armistice. Col. WILLIAM G. EVERSON (1879-1954) retired at the rank of Major General in 1945, having served as the Chief of the National Guard Bureau of the U.S. Army until 1931.
