DAVID G. FARRAGUT
(1801 - 1870) Union rear admiral instrumental in the taking of New Orleans and the Union control of the Mississippi. It was at Mobile Bay where he exclaimed ‘Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!'. A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Norfolk, Dec. 5, 1858, to Paul H. Langdon. In part: ‘…I have intended writing you some days, but have been so pressed…in the settlement of my accounts, & the California mine…', following with more personal, content. Original transmittal cover affixed at conclusion of letter, extra folds, chip to edge, very good. Within days of this letter, Farragut learned that his next assignment was to command the BROOKLYN, a ship he would sail to the Gulf of Mexico in the final years before the Civil War. Paul H. Langdon served as Farragut's personal secretary for a spell before the Civil War, but quit upon the beginning of hostilities and joined the Confederate Army!
