Description:

DAVID G. FARRAGUT AND JOHN HENRY BROOKS
DAVID G. FARRAGUT (1801 - 1870) Union rear admiral instrumental in the taking of New Orleans and the Union control of the Mississippi. It was at Mobile Bay where he exclaimed ‘Damn the torpedoes! Four bells, Captain Drayton, go ahead. Jouett, full speed!' An extremely fine association partly-printed D.S., 8 x 3.5 in., Washington, D.C., Sep. 28, 1866, a promissory note to pay Farragut forty dollars, plus interest, after sixty-two months. The note is signed at bottom right by JOHN HENRY BROOKS (1836-1897), a Black U.S. Navy petty officer who served as Farragut's steward at Mobile Bay and beyond, and wrote a lengthy and detailed account on the day of the battle. Farragut endorses the verso ‘D. G. Farragut' in black ink, adding Brooks' name, the date which the loan was repaid, and the total amount repaid, also striking through Brooks' name on the recto in black ink. Ragged at the left edge, shows horizontal folds, otherwise in very good to fine condition overall.
