Description:

DANIEL E. SICKLES
(1825-1914) Union major general who commanded a brigade at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, where his rash advance in the Peach Orchard nearly caused a Union rout. War-date A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., New York, Aug 26, 1864, writing to JOHN P. SLOUGH (1829-1867), Union brigadier general who defied Canby's orders to successfully engage Confederates at Glorieta Pass in New Mexico, defended Harpers Ferry in the Valley Campaign, and mortally wounded following a political dispute in a Santa Fe poolroom. In part: ‘…This note will be handed to you by Mr. Wm. Florence of New York who has a nephew George W. Shaw late a private in company K 5th N.Y. Vol., now under confinement and I believe awaiting at Alexandria as a deserter. The circumstances of the case are so well known to me that I can assure you there was no intention to desert. He was only 17 when enlisted – early in 1861 – was a sickly youth who was anxious to serve but soon proved to be holy unfit…I beg to commend the case to your favorable consideration and if deemed consistent with our duty, I shall esteem it a personal favor, General, if you will discharge him under par. 158-9…' Fine. SOLD WITH: an engraving of Sickles and newspaper clippings of articles relating to Sickles and the Lincoln assassination.
