Description:

(1775 - 1825) American politician, Governor of New York, Vice President of the United States under James Monroe. Printed D.S. as governor, 1p. 16 x 12 in. (opened), Albany, May 28, 1811, appointing Josephus B. Stuart a surgeon's mate in the New York Militia. Boldly signed at the conclusion, co-signed by New York Secretary of State ELISHA JENKINS (1772-1848). Moderately toned with chipping and edge wear, small tear along a crease is repaired on the verso with tape. Interestingly, the verso of the bears an endorsement attesting to Stuart's qualification signed by physician CHARLES D. COOPER (1769-1831). Years before this, Cooper became known in American history by attending a dinner party at which Alexander Hamilton spoke forcefully against the Federalist Party's plans to nominate Aaron Burr as their candidate in the 1804 election. Cooper wrote a letter to Phillip Schuyler afterwards, Hamilton's father-in-law, relaying the negative opinions of Burr. The letter would eventually be published in 'The Albany Register' and was reportedly the last straw in the ongoing rivalry between the two prominent Americans, for when Burr read the letter weeks later, he was so enraged by the remarks that he challenged Hamilton to their famous duel.
