Lot 756
756. DANIEL BOONE'S SON AND NAMESAKE WANTS HIS PAYCHECK An unusual and interesting A.L.S., 1p. 4to., St. Louis, Mo., August 20, 1815 in which E. Hempstead, apparently a regular army officer, writes to the Secretary of War with the following information: "I am requested to forward the enclosed accounts for the purpose of knowing whether of not they can be paid. The district paymaster having refused to do it and the law authorizing it, in the opinion of the claimants. If admitted either on authority to draw forte amount or an order here for the paymaster here to pay it will be claimed. If not admitted, the reasons for refusing to pay will be communicated to those interested. Daniel M. Boone was during the time mentioned in the account a captain of Rangers. Profud K. Robbins, & David Bailey Lieutenant of Rangers for the same period." Although historical records indicate that Daniel Boone and his namesake son Daniel M. Boone were both in Missouri at the time in question, it was the son who was a Captain in the Missouri rangers for much of 1814. Clean repaired fold splits, otherwise very good. $150-200
