Description:

DABNEY H. MAURY
(1822-1900) Confederate major general who fought at Pea Ridge and later served with the Army of the West at Iuka and Corinth. Interesting content war-date manuscript D.S. ‘D H Maury', 1p. 4to., ‘Brookes Station', VA, Aug. 20,1861, a handwritten copy of a ‘Circular' issued by Gen. Theopolis H. Holmes, in full: ‘The attention of the General Commanding has just been called to the fact that the Troops have been using the fuel and some of the timber of the Rail Road company which have, for convenience been placed near this track. This is not only unjust to the company but will tend to impair the efficiency of the Troops by embarrassing the movements of the trains upon which we all depend for transportation. Commanding Officers will therefore take every means to prevent the troops from, in future, using in any manner the wood for fuel, the sills, the wooden rails or any other property of the Rail Road company.' Holmes' secretarial signature is added at the conclusion, with Maury signing below as Holmes' adjutant in black ink. Shows mounting remnants to the verso which have caused some paper loss at bottom right, with original mailing folds and minor toning to the edges, otherwise in very good condition overall.
