Description:

CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS - SERGEI BIRYUZOV
(1904 - 1964) World War I Marshall of the Soviet Union who in 1962 was promoted Commander of the Strategic Rocket Forces, a tactically trained unit of specialist soldiers known for their anti-American sentiments. He formulated the plan to put nuclear warheads in Cuba and was responsible for the ensuing Missile Crisis! Very scarce typed D.S. "S. Biryuzov", 2pp. legal 4to., a military attestation covering the period of Oct. 2 to Nov. 26, 1962 vouching for the reliability of various individuals assigned to the Strategic Rocket Forces during the height of the Missile Crisis and its shaky aftermath. Although the Cuban Missile Crisis appeared publicly resolved on Oct. 28, 1962, many events would take place causing both the United States and the Soviet Union to remain in a state of high alert! On Nov. 3, 1962, President Kennedy threatened Khrushchev that if on-site inspection of the missiles being removed was not allowed "very serious problems" will arise. Due to Biryuzov's short tenure as head of the Strategic Rocket Forces (two years) and his untimely death at age 63, documents of this period are extremely scarce and desirable. Very good.
