797. SAMUEL COOPER (1798-1876) Confederate major general who was the highest ranking officer in the Confederate army. He served as Inspector General in Richmond throughout the war and fled with Jefferson Davis when the capitol fell. D.S., 1p. 4to., War Dept., Washington, Aug. 29, 1854, a special order ordering a second lieutenant to report for duty. Some damp stains in body of letter, else very good. $75-100
