Description:

CONFEDERATES KILLING NEGROES AT PLYMOUTH AND COLD HARBOR
Superb content and association war-date A.L.S., "H.M. McDonald", 2pp., 8vo., Richmond, June 7, 1864, a letter to his cousin S.J. McDonald. McDonald, a soldier in Major General Robert Hoke's Brigade, recounts his unit's actions at the Battle of Plymouth and his disposition during the Battle of Cold Harbor. In part: "...I am still in the land of the living but not very well and am most broke down. I tell you we have been put through the last two months. We is at this time 12 miles below Richmond on the Chickahominy. Our brigade came here last Sunday. Old Lee is still on our left fighting away. I think Lee will get Grant or I am in hopes of it... There is some Negro soldiers against us on the opposite side of us but they had better leg it or we will put them in the same line we put them at Plymouth. We will kill everr one we find under arms and dressed in soldier's clothes for we can't stand to look at them... Our company have been cut up very bad since I wrote to you last... we is all very near wore down. I tell you I am getting tired of this war and fighting. I think we will have hard times this summer and a great deal of fighting to do. I think the Yankees will try their best for Richmond this time but I hope the Lord will be with us and enable us to turn them back from our land..." Hoke's Brigade helped overrun Union forces at the Battle of Plymouth, where captured Union soldiers later reported that all Colored Regiments who surrendered were summarily shot, while those who tried to escape were hunted down and then butchered. Hoke's Brigade were in Richmond for the battle of Cold Harbor, Lee's last major stand, but were held up from the main fighting on orders of General Anderson. Age toned with minor fraying along left margin, else fine.
