CONFEDERATE SOLDIER'S LETTER
A.L.S. of Pvt. Noah Deaton of the 26th North Carolina, 4pp. 12mo., Richmond, Va., June 27, 1862 to his father concerning his participation in the Seven Days before Richmond and reporting on the Confederate victory at Gaines Mill. He writes, in part: "...We are about 6 miles east of Richmond fronting the enemy we left Kinston, N.C. and came to Petersburg Va... there is very heavy skirmishing here every day and night we have been in several skirmishes since we came here but luckily none of our company has been killed...we were about 2 days and nights without daring to close our eyes for sleep or us and the enemy were firing on each other at ever[y] corner and from behind trees[.] we have driven the enemy in to their trenches but it take much force to keep the m back...our men has gained a great victory on the lines north of us capturing about 100 cannon and several thousand prisoners..."
