CONFEDERATE SOLDIER'S LETTER
Good content A.L.S. of Pvt. Noah Deaton of the 26th North Carolina, 4pp. 8vo., "Hanover junction on the North Anna River Va." May 14, 1863 to a friend, reporting, in part: "...We came by Railroad from Kinston to this place, we were encamped near the Railroad Bridges across the North Anna, guarding the Bridge...[Union] cavalry made a dash on that part of the road. Our general was at Hanover C.H. and came within 15 minutes of being captured the enemy in their Cavilry [sic] raid I sup[p]ose have made their way back to their own lines....they have done very littel[sic]damage all of which was repaired in a few days. As to the great battle on the Rappahannock I only know What appears in the papers -- that God has again been pleased to crown our army with another great victory [Chancellorsville] perhaps the greatest of the war while every hart [sic] is gladdened with the victory -- every heart mourns the loss of the hero of the days Gen. Jackson's corps passed here today...General R. E. Lee is considered the greatest genius of the age b the yankees and I guess he will meet them at any point it they make their appearance...I learn from a letter to this company that the men detailed from the brigade are in Moore playing havoc with the deserters. It was stated that S. w. Brewer from our company has shot two of them. Mr. Brewer is a good and expert soldier and willing to do his duty under all circumstances...saw about 4000 yankees [prisoners] pass this Brigade on their way to Richmond the truth is they are as tired of the war as any of us..." Dampstains obscure some words in text, usual folds, else very good.
