A fine lot of ten items signed by Confederate politicians representing the state of Virginia, includes: THOMAS S. BOCOCK (1815-1891) Representative for Virginia to the provisional Confederate Congress and Speaker of the Confederate House. Signature ‘Th. S. Bocock' in black ink on a 4 x 2 in. slip of paper, adding his title and district. Ink is a tad light, mounted, with adhesive stains, else very good. WITH: JOHN B. BALDWIN (1820-1873) Delegate to the Virginia secession convention and Representative to both Confederate Congresses. War-date A.N.S. on a letter from John S. Preston, Superintendent of the Confederate Bureau of Conscription, 1p. 4to. [Richmond,] Sep. 9, 1863, a draft of a telegram to an ‘Insp[ector] Thompson], regarding the papers of a ‘...James W. Davis for whom a Habeas Corpus has been issued…' He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Baldwin executes a second A.N.S. on the verso, drafting a telegram to Davis' father, informing him of the progress of his son's case, and again signs in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, slightly ragged at the left edge, else very good. WITH: WILLIAM B. PRESTON (1805-1862) Delegate to the Virginia constitution convention and Representative to the provisional Confederate Congress, dies in office. Manuscript L.S. as Secretary of the Navy under Zachary Taylor, 1p. 4to., [Washington, D.C.], Nov. 15, 1849, to noted Cincinnati poet and autograph collector Lewis Jacob Cist, responding to his correspondent's request for an autograph. He signs boldly ‘Wm Ballard Preston' at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, mildly toned and ragged at the left edge, and with a pencil identifying inscription at top left, else very good. WITH: ALLEN T. CAPERTON (1810-1876) Confederate Senator from modern West Virginia, which he represented in the U.S. Senate postwar. Signature ‘A. J. Caperton' in black ink on a 4.25 x 1 in. slip of paper, adding ‘West Virginia'. His death date has been added in pencil, mildly toned and with mounting traces to the verso, else very good. WITH: WILLIAM C. RIVES (1792-1868) Member of the peace commission to Washington and a delegate to the provisional Confederate House for Virginia, elected to the second Confederate Congress in 1864. Signature ‘W G Rives' in black ink on a 4.25 x 1 in. slip of paper cut from an album page. His state and an identifying inscription have been added in other hands, toned, with mounting traces to the verso, else very good. WITH: ALEXANDER R. BOTELER (1815-1892) Virginia delegate to the provisional and first Confederate Houses, also served on ‘Stonewall' Jackson's staff. Signature ‘Alex R Boteler' with sentiment in black ink on a 3 x 1.25 in. slip of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter. Mounted, with adhesive stains, else very good. WITH: JOHN R. CHAMBLISS, SR. (1809-1875) Virginia cavalry colonel elected to the first Confederate Congress. Signature ‘Jno R Chambliss' with sentiment in black ink on a 3 x 1 in. slip of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter. Mounted, with adhesive stains, else very good. WITH: CHARLES F. COLLIER (1817-1899) Virginia Representative to the first Confederate Congress but was defeated for reelection, offered to surrender Petersburg to Union troops. Signature ‘Chas. F. Collier' in black ink on the verso of his 3.5 x 2.25 in. calling card, adding his position and state. Toned, with mounting traces to the verso, else very good. WITH: DANIEL C. DE JARNETTE (1822-1881) Virginia Representative to the first and second Confederate Congresses. Bold signature ‘D. C. De Jarnette' in black ink on a 4.75 x 3 in. slip of paper cut from an album page, adding his district. Shows mounting traces on the verso, else very good. WITH: JOHN W. BROCKENBROUGH (1806-1877) Virginia delegate to the peace convention in Washington and a representative to the provisional Confederate Congress. Signature with sentiment in black ink on a 3 x 1.5 in. card, adding the date ‘Nov. 26, 1873'. Toned, with mounting traces to the verso, else very good. Ten pieces.
