A fine lot of five items signed by Confederate politicians representing the state of Texas, includes: PENDLETON MURRAH (1824-1865) Tenth governor of Texas from 1863-1865, emphatically supported the Confederate cause, although he became embroiled in controversy over the conscription of Texas militia troops into the Confederate Army. Encouraged Texans to continue to fight after Lee's surrender, but fled to Mexico when he learned of the imminent Union occupation of Texas. Signature ‘P. Murrah' in black ink on a 2.75 x 0.5 in. slip of paper. Mounted, with adhesive stains, else very good. WITH: WILLIAM S. OLDHAM (1813-1868) Delegate from Texas to the provisional Confederate Congress, served in the Confederate Senate throughout the war. Signature ‘W. S. Oldham' with sentiment in black ink on a 3 x 1.25 in. slip of paper cut from a letter. Mounted, toned, else very good. WITH: STEPHEN H. DARDEN (1816-1902) Unionist representative for Texas to the secession convention, elected to the Confederate House in 1864 after a tour of duty as an officer of Texas troops. Signature ‘Steph. H. Darden' in black ink on a 3.25 x 2 in. card, adding his position and state. Shows a loss to the top right corner, toned, with mounting traces and an ink identifying inscription to the verso, else very good. WITH: ANTHONY M. BRANCH (1823-1867) Texas cavalry captain who was elected to the Confederate House in 1863. Signature ‘A M Branch' with sentiment in black ink on a 3 x 1 in. slip of paper. Mounted, toned, else very good. WITH: BENJAMIN H. EPPERSON (1826-1878) Unionist advisor to Governor Sam Houston, unsuccessful candidate for the Confederate Congress in 1861. Signature ‘ B. H. Epperson' with sentiment in black ink on a 3.75 x 1 in. slip of paper. Mounted, in very good condition. Five pieces.
