A fine lot of eleven items signed by Confederate politicians representing the state of South Carolina, includes: FRANCIS W. PICKENS (1805 - 1869) Confederate Governor of South Carolina who ordered the bombardment of Fort Sumter. War-date A.E.S. on the verso of a letter sent to him by T. Ladson Webb. Jr., 1p. 4to., Charleston, July 5, 1861, reading in part: ‘...During the month of June I made application to you for a commission in the Engr. Corps of the State of South Carolina...' On verso Pickens dockets the letter: ‘The Confederate Govt. have taken charge of Engineer department appointed Major Tiffin[?] chief of the Corps with authority to appoint applicant - apply to him. F.W.P.' Light toning, with original mailing folds, else very good. WITH: ANDREW G. MAGRATH (1813-1893) South Carolina state delegate to the Secession Convention, elected Governor in December, 1864. A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], a legal note to an unnamed general, informing his correspondent that an unnamed woman is ready to relinquish an unstated title. He signs ‘A. G Magrath' at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, evenly toned, slightly ragged at the left edge, else very good. WITH: A second 3.5 x 2.25 in. card bearing the signature of ANDREW G. MAGRATH in black ink, adding his position and the date ‘1865'. Evenly toned, with mounting traces to the verso, else very good. WITH: ROBERT BARNWELL RHETT (1800-1876) An early advocate of secession, representative for South Carolina to the provisional Confederate Congress and the Confederate House. Signature ‘R. Barnwell Rhett' in black ink on a 4 x 1.5 in. slip of paper, adding his positions. Mounted, toned, else very good. LEWIS M. AYER, JR. (1821-1895) South Carolina Representative to the provisional Confederate Congress and the Confederate House. Ownership signature and inscription in black ink on an 8vo. page removed from a book, dated Sep. 4, 1893 at Charleston. Evenly toned, with archival tape residue to recto and verso, else very good. WITH: BENJAMIN F. PERRY (1805-1886) Unionist Representative to the Confederate House and Governor of South Carolina appointed by Andrew Johnson at war's end. Bold, somewhat shaky signature ‘B. F. Perry' in black ink on a 3.75 x 2.5 in. card, adding ‘S. C.' Shows a pencil identifying inscription to the verso, else fine. WITH: THOMAS JEFFERSON WITHERS (1804-1865) Delegate to the South Carolina secession convention and one of the organizers of the provisional Confederate Congress, elected to the Confederate Senate but refused to serve. Signature ‘T. J. Withers' with sentiment in black ink on a 3 x 1.5 in. slip of paper cut from a letter. Mounted, with adhesive stains, else very good. WITH: JAMES L. ORR (1822-1873) Delegate to the South Carolina secession convention and Confederate Senator throughout the war. Signature in black ink on a 4.75 x 2 in. slip of paper, adding ‘Anderson South Carolina'. Faintly toned, shows mounting traces and a pencil identifying inscription to the verso, else very good. WITH: WILLIAM W. BOYCE (1818-1890) Delegate to the provisional Confederate Congress and pro-peace Representative to the House. Signature in black ink on a 3.25 x 2 in. card, adding his position and state. Toned, with mounting traces to the verso, else very good. WITH: JAMES H. NASH (1828-1919) Senate Secretary of the first Confederate Congress. Signature in black ink on a 3.5 x 1.5 in. slip of paper. Mounted, else very good. WITH: J. D. AULDEN (?-?), signature in black ink on a 2.75 x 1.25 in slip of paper, mounted, with a pencil inscription on the verso of the mount identifying him as a member of the Confederate Congress for South Carolina, although no other information can be located. Toned, else very good. Eleven pieces.
