A fine lot of eleven items signed by Confederate politicians representing the state of Georgia, includes: HERSCHEL VESPASIAN JOHNSON (1812-1880) Delegate to the Georgia secession convention and pro-peace Senator representing the state from 1862-1865. Good association A.L.S. as pre-war Governor of Georgia, 2pp. 4to., Milledgeville, Nov. 26, 1853, to President Franklin Pierce. Johnson recommends that the President extend the appointment of a Major E. H. Wingfield to the Indian Agency in New Mexico, in part: ‘It affords me great pleasure to say that E. H. Wingfield Esq is known to me personally as a gentleman and politically as a sound Democrat… He was appointed to office by Mr. [Millard] Fillmore, but he never wavered in his devotion to the Democratic cause. He happens to be the brother-in-law of Senator [William C.] Dawson and doubtless rec'd his appointment through his influence with Mr. Fillmore…' He signs ‘H. V. Johnson' in black ink at the conclusion. Shows original mailing folds with slight splits thereto at the edges, mildly toned, with three cello tape marks to the verso, else very good. WITH: JOSEPH E. BROWN (1821 - 1894) Governor of Georgia, a lead secessionist but a staunch opponent of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, describing him as a tyrant due to his wartime policies. Signature in black ink on a 3.75 x 2.25 in. card, adding his title and the date ‘1861'. Toned, with mounting traces to the verso, else very good. WITH: BENJAMIN H. HILL (1823-1882) Delegate to the Georgia secession convention and a Confederate Senator throughout the war. Signature ‘Benj H Hill' in black ink on a 3 x 2 in. card, adding his position and state. Toned, with mounting traces to the verso, else very good. WITH: JOSEPH H. ECHOLS (1816-1885) Confederate Senator for Georgia until 1863, when he was elected to the second Confederate House. Signature ‘J. H. Echols' in black ink on a 2 x 1 in. slip of paper, adding his position. Mounted, toned, else very good. WITH: JOHN W. LEWIS (1801-1865) Confederate Senator for Georgia until 1862, when he resigned. Signature ‘Jno. W. Lewis' in black ink on a 3.5 x 0.75 in. slip of paper cut from the conclusion of a letter. Mounted, with adhesive stains, else very good. WITH: HIRAM P. BELL (1827-1907) Delegate to the Georgia secession convention, served in the Confederate Army until being severely wounded at Vicksburg, after which he was elected to the second Confederate House. Signature in violet ink on a 5.5 x 2.25 in. slip of paper cur from an album page, adding ‘Cumming Ga'. Shows stains, with mounting traces and a pencil identifying inscription to the verso, else very good. WITH: MARK. H. HARDIN (1826-1902) Confederate Army officer, lost an arm at McDowell, elected to the second Confederate House. Signature in black ink on a 3.5 x 2 in. card, adding his position and state. Toned, mounted, else very good. WITH: WILLIAM W. CLARK (1819-1883) Georgia Representative to the first Confederate House. Large signature ‘W. W. Clark' in black ink on a 4 x 1.75 in. slip of paper, adding ‘Covington Geo'. Mounted, with adhesive stains, else very good. WITH: MARTIN J. CRAWFORD (1820-1883) Georgia delegate to the provisional Confederate Congress, appointed special peace commissioner by Davis, also served as a Georgia Cavalry officer. Signature in black ink on a 6 x 2.5 in. slip of paper cut from an album page, adding ‘Columbus Georgia'. Faintly toned, with mounting traces and a pencil identifying inscription to the verso, else very good. WITH: CLIFFORD ANDERSON (1833-1899) Georgia Representative to the second Confederate Congress. Signature in black ink on a 3.5 x 2 in. card, adding his position and state. Toned, with mounting traces and an ink notation to the verso, else very good. WITH: WARREN AKIN (1811-1877) A friend and advisor to Jefferson Davis, represented Georgia in the Confederate Congress for eighteen weeks in 1863. Signature in black ink on a 3.25 x 1.5 in. card, adding his position and state. Toned, Mounted, else very good. Eleven pieces.
