Description:

CONFEDERATE OFFICER'S LETTER, LATER KIA AT GETTYSBURG
A rare Confederate court martial written and signed by First Lt. John H. McDade, 11th NC who would be killed at Gettysburg, 2pp. 8vo., Hanover Junction, Va., May 24, 1863 on building a case to court martial two privates for theft. In part: "…A few days since your letter in regard to a pair of boots states by L.D. Vann, was recd I sent the boots, also a double case gold watch belonging to a Mr. Tolson. They were carried by one of my men going to Chapel Hill on furlough. His name is Jas. H. Clement. Vann is to be tried by a court martial for the theft & as I am anxious to get all the evidence I can ag[ain]st him you will greatly oblige by sending your sworn deposition, also that of Mr. Tolson. I will be obliged for your acknowledgement of the receipt of the boots & watch…". Justice was never served as McDade died at Gettysburg while Lemuel D. Vann deserted twice from the 11th North Carolina Infantry, once in July 1863, the second time 'to the enemy' on March 3, 1865. Very good.
