Description:

COL. ERNEST "TEX" LEE
(1911-1965) San Antonio native who joined the Army and became Eisenhower's Executive Officer and Aide-de-Camp when the future general was a colonel. Accompanied Eisenhower through the ranks, and the war, remaining with Eisenhower through the planning and execution of the invasions of Sicily and Normandy, and ultimately the conquest of Berlin. Superb set of relics relating to Lee's Army career: his original campaign medals and other military decorations. Lee's decorations are quite rare, as many were awarded only due to his proximity to high-level American actions, and his command abilities. Lee's Army decorations are numerous, and include the U.S. Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, American Defense Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Foreign medals include: The Order of Ouissam Alaouite [Officer Class], given to American officers who had organized Operation TORCH, the 1942 invasion of French Morocco; the Soviet Union's Medal for Battle Merit [#2337625], usually given out to high-ranking American officers by Marshal Zhukov; Free France's Ordre de la Liberation, issued by Charles de Gaulle from 1940 to 1946 for aid to France; France's Croix de Guerre with Palms and Chevalier of the Legion of Honor; Belgium's Order of Leopold and Croix de Guerre with Palms; Great Britain's coveted Order of the British Empire; and the Order of Courrons de Chene from Luxembourg. Also included is Lee's genuine war-service Zippo lighter, monogrammed with his initials and emblazoned with an American eagle and shield. Lee left Germany in December, 1945, and separated from the service in May, 1946. A fine display of medals earned by an American privy to some of the war's greatest and harshest moments, almost all preserved in their original boxes. Obtained directly from Lee's family.
