Lot 793
793. HOWELL COBB (1815-1868) American politician, congressman, and Secretary of the Treasury (1857-60). He resigned from the Treasury in December of 1860 citing that his home state of Georgia (then about to secede from the Union) was in need of his services. Although the Confederate congress appointed him brigadier-general, and was subsequently promoted to major-general, he took little part in military action. A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Washington, Feb. 19, 1845, a letter of recommendation. In part: "...Col. Stiles was the first applicant from Ga. for an office of the character you desire...I know of no one who desires an office from the Administration whom it would offer me more pleasure to serve than yourself..." Very good. $150-200
