Description:

CLAUDE MONET
(1840 - 1926) French painter and a most important founder on the Impressionist movement, perhaps best remembered for his gentle renderings of water lilies and pastoral scenes. A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Argenteuil, May 30, 1875, to an unnamed recipient. Monet has received the letter from his correspondent announcing that he could give '…him 150 francs in cash...but I don't know where to get the other 250 because the timing is so bad for me. Well, certainly we don't want to incur unnecessary expenses. Try, therefore, Sir, to extend your kindness to the utmost…'. Monet then urges his correspondent to go see the artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir at his home: '…Ask for him, he will be in Argenteuil all week where we will find him between eleven o'clock and noon...'. The year 1875 was one of incredible artistic output for Monet and followed a few years of financial drain as well as the support of his previous gallerist, who had turned his back on the painter and his Impressionist contemporaries such as Renoir. He found himself in the position of having to represent his own work and thus set up exhibitions in 1874 with his friends Renoir, Bazille and Sisley, during which Monet displayed 18 paintings, including The Beach at Sainte-Adresse. However, in 1875 Monet continued to struggle with finances, as evident in this letter. Nonetheless, 1875 would be a year of great artistic output, with Monet creating two of his most famous works, including the portraits of his wife Camille in 'Camille au Metier' and 'Woman with a Parasol', as well as 'Argenteuil', and 'The Seine at Argenteuil'. Boldly penned and in fine condition.
