Description:

CLAUDE MONET
(1840 - 1926) French painter and a most important founder on the Impressionist movement, perhaps best remembered for his gentle renderings of water lilies and pastoral scenes. Fine content A.L.S. in dark pencil, 2pp. 8vo., Giverny, May 29, 1916, in French to his close friend, art critic G. Geffroy (1855-1926). Geffroy was President of the Goncourt Academy and wrote the first biography of Monet. In part: "...Do you have any news about poor [Octave] Mirbeau? I myself have had none since I wrote you, but after the last letters from his wife I know he is supposed to leave Paris on the 13th...I would like to have your opinion on the subject of dining at Giverny and what you have decided. It goes without saying that you and all the Goncourt members will always be welcome here, even without our dear Mirbeau. Also, this will be sad for him and for us...". Novelist Octave Mirbeau (1848-1917) is best remembered for his work Dostoevsky-esque novel L'Abbé Jules as well as The Torture Garden and Diary of a Chamber Maid. He and Monet were the closest of friends - Monet considered the author on a par with Tolstoy, and the pair reveled in their gardens. Mirbeau may have been ill at the time, as he would succumb to illness eight months later. With original holograph envelope, fine condition.
