CIVIL WAR SOLDIER'S LETTER - 1ST NEW YORK LIGHT ARTILLERY
Good content A.L.S. by John S. Sargent of the 1st New York Light Artillery, Battery L., "camp near the Weldon Railroad", Oct. 7, 1864. Sargent writes in pencil to his sister in Rochester, New York, in part: "...I was sorry to hear you had been sick, but I am glad you are getting better...We had a sad accident happen about a week ago when we were out drilling one of the caissons exploded and burnt 2 men pretty badly they have gone to the hospital. One of them was the Orderly Sergeant. 4 horses were burnt, it was a wonder a great many more were not hurt. There were only a few shell exploded else there would have been more hurt. The 30th of last month we moved about 3 miles to the left and front and took position in the afternoon. We were not engaged, the Infantry captured a Fort that the Rebs had just completed, and line of works, some part of the 9th Corps broke or we would have gained more. We are putting up 3 Forts on our new line, our Battery is going in one of them we are in position by it now it will be done in a day or two. We received 2 months pay since I wrote home last...". Weldon Railroad was the site of a decisive Confederate victory in August, 1864. With Union losses of over 2,500, the battle was a great morale booster to the beleaguered Confederacy. Two days after Sargent penned this letter, the Battle of Tom's Brook commenced, with the Union answering with a significant victory over Rosser. Very good condition, with original holograph envelope addressed in pen.
