Description:

CIVIL WAR CORRESPONDENCE OF PVT. GEORGE D. PLUMHAFF
Good lot of four war-date letters from Union Pvt. George L. Plumhaff (Shown as George D. in Official Records), serving in Co. A, 97th Ill. in New Orleans, 1pp. 4to., New Orleans, Jan. 18 - July 6, 1864. Plumhaff, who would die on Dec. 3, 1864, is apparently illiterate, but has his fellow soldiers pen and sign his letters. He writes in wife, in part: "...we had a large fire here on Saturday...it burned up a captain, lieutenant and another man was badly burned...I would have sent mu likeness but I have no money...there is a good deal of talk again about our getting paid...you desire me to come home on a furlough...furloughs are hard to get down here...[given] to those who first came out with the regiment and have not been home for 19 months...we had quite a fire here last Friday. 8 steamboats & two small schooners. They were supposed to have been set on fire by some rebels as the steam boats were al in the employ of the government. During the burning some shells exploded...causing a rush by the crowd on shore...on the levee there were a great many large iron water pipes & they were full of men who were desirous of escaping the death that they thought awaited them outside...some of the crowd lost their hats in the rush...some of our boys made a good [?] in this way...There was a grand celebration of the 4th of July...salutes by the battery, speeches by Major Genl. Sickles...one man belonging to one of the batteries got his arm badly hurt by the discharge of the guns...the Rebels care very little here especially the women. The insult the Yankees whenever they meet them on the street. All the Registered Rebels have to leave town & go across the lines to their Rebel friends...We can easily spare a few thousands of these traitors...". Very good.
