Description:

CIVIL WAR "AVOID THE DRAFT" RECRUITING PAMPHLET
Rare recruiting pamphlet, a 7" x 8" broadside beautifully wood-framed, [Pennsylvania], [1863?], "AVOID THE DRAFT BY JOINING Capt. W.F. Walter's Company". The pamphlet promises a "$600 bounty" for joining Walter's Company, H Co of the 104th Pennsylvania Infantry, and continues, in part: "The Company now numbers 50 Men. This Company is authorized to be raised under General Order No. 52, issued by the War Department...Now, therefore is the time to come forward if you would avoid the Draft...". The Federal Government instituted the first of its highly-unpopular Civil War drafts in 1863, and volunteering in exchange for a bounty bonus was one common route of avoiding the draft. Walter fought with his company; he was wounded in Fair Oaks, Va. on May 31, 1862, and then mustered out for disability on Nov. 4, 1862. Uneven toning, else fine.
