Description:

(CHINA) SILVER-TRIMMED WALKING STICK OF ADM. WILLIAM KENNEDY, R.N.
ADMIRAL SIR WILLIAM KENNEDY (1838-1916) Royal Navy admiral who served as Commander in Chief, The Nore. Kennedy was present during the bombardment of Canton, 1856 at the Battle of Fatshan Creek, 1857, and at the attack on the Peiho Forts in 1858 during the Second Opium War. He had various commands in the North and South Atlantic and was commander in chief of the East Indies in 1895 and of the Nore in 1900. Offered here is Walker's impressive walking stick, constructed of knobby wood 35 in. long overall with a silver cap fitted at the bottom. The bottom of the cap has a brass coin dated 1870 screwed into the wood, its origin impossible to determine. Two custom sterling silver bands are secured about the upper part of the cane to prevent further expansion of a crack. One band is engraved: 'W. R. Kennedy', the second, lower band engraved: 'ROYAL NAVY'. A nice historic artifact.
