Description:

CHARLOTTE AUGUSTA OF WALES
(1796 - 1817) English princess, the only child of George IV and Caroline of Brunswick, died very early while in childbirth. Very rare A.L.S. "Charlotte" [n.p., "Thursday evening", n.y.], to a gentleman, in part: "...I received your letter and inclosures this M[orning] & do not delay returning them to you after having read them through...With my opinion I have entertained of you since I first became acquainted with you added to which the confidence & regard my whole family on the Brunswick side have ever expressed & shewn towards you, you cannot doubt the Communication you have made to me & the whole Circumstances have been exceedingly painful - For from my strict love of Justice wh[ich] will not allow me to shade faults where they are I cannot deny your case is a bad one & has met with aggravations & forgetfulness on the length of time you have served in the family - I can only assure you that whatever I can do for your service I will certainly & at the same time shall be quite silent respecting my knowledge of the affair till you should consider any personal interference of use...Count Muster has confidentially informed of your application to me strengthened with an appeal from me to him for his kind Offices...This was the best step I could take for the present...". Fold at middle lightly repaired with archival tape, else very good, boldly written in her sprawling hand. With a portrait engraving. Handwritten letters of royalty are quite rare in any event, making this one a particularly scarce example due to Charlotte's early demise.
