CHARLES A. VARNUM
(1849 - 1936) American military officer, a second lieutenant in the 7th Cavalry and Custer's Chief of Scouts, engaged with Reno at the Little Big Horn and the last surviving officer of that battle. Good content A.L.S. "C. W. Varnum" in the third person, 1p. 4to., San Francisco, Apr. 7, [19]30 offering his correspondent a list of "The officers of the 7th Cavalry in 1876" listing the names of forty officers and their ranks including "Colonel S. D. Sturgis, Recruiting duty. Lt. Col. Geo A Custer Major J. S. Tilford Major Lewis Merrill Major M. A. Reno" and so forth down to the company level listing captains and lieutenants including "Capt. T[homas] A. Custer". Lightly toned, minor creases, else very good. Matted with a portrait.
