Description:

Pair of nineteenth or early twentieth-century sabers, the first 33" blade, 39" overall, with a three-bar basket-style hilt, peened to the blade tang and securing a wood grip covered with browned rayskin and wrapped with bright metal wire. The handguard shows speckled brown patination overall, and the grip shows some losses to the skin covering at top and bottom, exposing some of the underlying wood. The reverse ricasso of the blade bears the mark of an unidentified Solingen maker. A mummified leather washer is fitted to the blade side of the guard, and the weapon is housed in a steel scabbard with two suspension rings, showing a brown patina and several notable dents on both sides. The second example, 34" blade, 39" overall, features a three-bar, basket-style hilt of brass-plated steel, peened to the tang and enclosing a leather-covered wood grip, with three strands of wire wrapping still visible, the remainder absent. The blade is unmarked but remains bright, and the weapon is housed in a steel scabbard with two suspension rings and a brown patina overall. Two pieces.
