Description:

CARLSTROM FIELD STEARMAN PT-17 FABRIC RELIC
Fine painted fabric aircraft relic, a U.S. Army Air Force star roundel, 30" dia., cut from a PT-17 Stearman trainer biplane. The red disk at the center of the insignia bears the yellow painted inscription: "U.S. Army Air Force Carlstrom Field Class of 43-B", with a USAAF insignia decal at center. The roundel further bears five original 4 1/2" x 3 1/4" b/w snapshots, each depicting trainee airmen with their aircraft. An August, 1942-dated certificate celebrating a pilot's first solo flight is also affixed at lower left, and the white star bears numerous faded signatures, most nearly invisible without the aid of a blacklight. The insignia is mounted in a black medal frame, and the paint shows even but heavy crackling overall, with overall toning, else very good. WITH: The yearbook of the 53rd Flying Training Detachment, based at Carlstrom Field, (Baton Rouge: Army and Navy Publishing Co. Inc.), 1943, 76pp. folio, featuring only classes 43-J and 43-K, but featuring numerous images of airman receiving training at the field. Very good. WITH: A well-illustrated "cadet's handbook", 144pp. 8vo., published by the Riddle Aeronautical Institute, a basic flight training outfit based at Carlstrom Field. Shows bumps to the covers, else very good. WITH: Original press photograph, 8" x 10" b/w, an aerial view o Carlstrom field, date-stamped "Apr. 15 1941" on the verso, and with a typed caption affixed thereto. Very good. WITH: Triangular green felt pennant, 28" x 9", bearing a U.S.A.A.F. winged propeller and the legend: "Carlstrom Field Arcadia, Fla." Very good. Five pieces. Carlstrom Airfield was one of thirty-two Air Service training camps established in 1917 after the United States entry into World War I. During World War II the field was used primarily to train pilots for the R.A.F.
