436. CANTEEN RECOVERED AT GETTYSBURG A great battlefield pick-up, a U.S. Model 1858 N.Y. Depot smooth-sided canteen with cloth cover remaining 99% intact as well as partial carrying strap, no apparent dents or damage, recovered from the Gettysburg battlefield, specifically at Pitzer's Woods behind the Confederate lines. It was likely picked up by a Confederate soldier and used by him during the battle. From the collection of John Gieselman, noted Gettysburg collector and a resident who started his enormous collection in the 1920's, carefully documenting his finds.
