791. EDWARD R. CANBY (1817-1873) Union major general who commanded the Department of New Mexico stopping Sibley's assault on California. He later commanded the assault on Mobile and after the war was killed by Modoc Indians. Lengthy A.E.S., Charleston, June 27, 1868, on the docket of a partly-printed L.S., 1p. 4to., New York, May 28, 1868 from the U.S. Treasury concerning stopping payment on a check. Canby's endorsement certifies that the check sent to his sister in Hannibal, Mo. had not arrived at his destination. Endorsed a second time in pencil by Canby adding his initials. Usual folds, otherwise fine. $150-200
