Description:

BURYING THE DEAD AT FAIR OAKS
War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to. by Sgt. Thomas H. Mason, Co. I, 56th N.Y, New Kent Court House, Va., May 12, 1862, in pencil. In part: "…our Regt left camp at Warwick Corners on…the 4th of May in pursuit of the enemy and came up to them before sun down. Our advance was giving them battle when we arrived…our division was called to reinforce them…at daylight we marched to the battlefield…to rest and bury the dead. I went over the ground of battle…such a sight I never saw…a good many of our men and a great more of the Rebels…they looked care worn and starved…and very badly clothed…a good many horses lay dead…we left the field…which was near Williamsburg and now lay between Williamsburg and New Kent Court House…about 6 or 7 miles from West Point at the head of the York River…most generally our meat is cooked before we start on or march. The boys raise the very Devil [with] Rebel sheep and cow and hogs. They do not wait to scold them hogs but skin them…Gen. McClellan has forbidden under [?] of being taken up by the Provost Guard…".Very good.
