Lot 51
51. (AARON BURR)(1756 - 1836) Vice President under Jefferson with whom he had been tied in the Presidential election of 1800, defeated through the efforts of Alexander Hamilton, who he later killed in a duel. A fascinating manuscript D.S. 3pp. 4to., Newport, Ky., Feb. 13, 1807, a deposition of "Jacob Fowler...that sometime in the month in September last, while engaged in Surveying lands of the United States in the Territory of Indiana, I employed Davis Floyd...to shew [sic] me some boundary lines on the Fork of the White River: that during this period we had several conversations relative to Aaron Burr and his movements, about which he pretended to be well informed, as the said Burr had disclosed them to him...at the City of Washington....The said Floyd informed me, that the said Burr meditated an attack on some of the Spanish possessions; and on my asking him how he could find a passage to there when Genl. Wilkinson and the army were in front - he replied, that the said Burr expected the General and army to join him, or that the army would be reasonably removed out of the way, so as to afford a free and safe passage to the said Burr and his followers; since which conversation, the said Floyd has joined...Burr; tho' he declared that, if his views proved inimical to the United States he would desert him...". Fowler further asserted that a man in his employ, who had been imprisoned by the Spanish at New Orleans, accompanied Floyd to join with Burr. A most fascinating record of one of the more murky episodes in American history that further contributed Burr's dubious reputation. A few weak folds, otherwise very good. $300-400
