Description:

A. W. BRIGGS Former British Royal Flying Corps aviator and aircraft manufacturer who sought to build aircraft for the U.S. Navy, including hydroplanes that would be tested along the Potomac River. On March 13, 1918, the first completed plane emerged from the factory and over the next few weeks, Leonard Bonney, who had flown under Orville Wright, completed several test flights. Less than a month later, Briggs resigned from the company, which changed its name to the Alexandria Aircraft Corporation. The Navy found the planes deficient, and in less than a year, the firm folded. A.L.S. on Aero Club of America letterhead, 4pp. 8vo., Alexandria, Nov. 9, 1917 to Aero Club president Henry Woodhouse. Good content, reading in part: '…Do you remember that some time ago I told you about my plans for building aeroplanes?...Believing that you will be interested I will briefly outline what I have done since that time…a company was incorporated…we took over the Kendrick Aeroplane Co. & changed the name to the Briggs Aeroplane Co…and began work on several new type boats…Our engineering department will comprise some of the best talent…we will be in the position to handle large orders…Whatever information or advice you may offer will be greatly appreciated…' Marginal damp stain lightly affecrs some of the text, else very good.
